TRACE OUR HISTORY WITH TODAY'S TRADITIONS

Drafted on May 20, 1775, the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was the first step in rejecting British rule for Charlottetown and Mecklenburg County. Inspired by the declaration of freedom and initiation of self-governance, Captain James Jack, a local tavern owner, risked his life to deliver these treasonous documents all the way from Charlotte to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

The Meck Mile presented by Albemarle salutes Captain Jack's arduous cross-country journey, with the quill pen in its logo to pay tribute to the fundamental role the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence played sparking revolution in the Continental Congress.
