The ACC football season kicks off and ends in Charlotte

The past few seasons I have toyed with the marketing slogan for the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game that revolves around the season ending in Charlotte. To me this is a powerful way to display the significance of the game, and more importantly hopefully create a sense of ownership of the game by the people who live here.

I am no marketing expert, but to me it always seemed incredible that every year we have the likes of Deshaun Watson or Kelvin Benjamin playing in primetime in our city. I feel that it is not a stretch to say that Charlotte is literally the center of the college football world starting at 8pm on the first Saturday of December.

2016 is a little different. This week Charlotte is hosting the ACC Kickoff event where media, coaches, and players will all meet to discuss their team’s fates for the upcoming season. Yes, this event might be a time of optimism and exaggerated belief, but we should recognize the significance in the fact that the ACC has made Charlotte a critical part of its football season.

Yes, I admit it might be a little too soon to talk about football, but I think that this is a moment that we should be proud of as sports fans  throughout the year. It is my hope that you embrace the fact that Charlotte is hosting the beginning and end of the ACC football season, and be an active participant in these events that elevate this city's status in the sports world.
